New QWR "Less dBA = More Trails" T-Shirt Up for Bid

The Quiet Warrior wants to thank all of you who have given him a warm welcome and offered support for Quiet Warrior Racing. As an earlier blog noted, QWR is a private consulting company that will be, among other things, promoting a “sound” land-use ethic on public roads and trails.

QWR looks forward to continuing its work as a contractor to BRC as well as branching out into other venues and issues such as SB 435. As some of you know, QWR took an early position on SB 435 and was recently featured on Fresno’s KMJ Radio in an interview and was quoted in an AP article on the bill. QWR urges you to listen to the entire show (interview and post interview phone calls from listeners) as it is very enlightening and is a good case study of the issue with all sides being presented.

One way QWR supports itself is by offering official T-shirts for auction. This is an easy way for riders to help QWR’s efforts - in Sacramento and elsewhere - to champion access to public roads and trails.

Recently, QWR developed a new “Less dBA = More Trails” T-shirt and the 1st one of the batch (in Large) is being offered on eBay.

QWR Features Ed Santin's "Quiet" 2001 YZ250F

The Recreation HQ will be posting the sound levels reported to QWR from other “Quiet Warriors” out there in riding land who also work hard to promote a responsible “exhaust note” ethic.

On such individual is AMA District 36’s own Ed “specialed” Santin who remains a major national force in the field of sound education. Ed, a member of the Dirt Diggers North MC, has carried his message to the AMA, elected officials, state parks, and most importantly the riding community.

QWR is proud to feature Ed’s 2001 Yamaha YZ250F. with a Big Gun exhaust system with two quiet cores installed. The bike tests at 91.5 dBA and will run with any other 250F.

Specialed notes the bike is 10 years old and has only required one piston change and some valve shims. One of his goals is to have “sound cards” produced so that they can be handed out to riders by groups such as AMA, BRC, D36, and QWR.

Thanks Ed for all you do and for being part of the Quiet Warrior Team. It is only fitting that your bike is the first “quiet bike” to be featured here at the HQ.

Test Example for SAE - J2825

As you know, The General is the “Quiet Warrior.” Since 1997, he has been on the cutting edge of advocating for sound education and appropriate enforcement of sound laws to address excessively loud motorcycle exhaust noise. He has helped sound tech as various OHV events throughout the country at areas ranging from the Stonyford OHV Area in Northern California to Loretta Lynn’s Ranch. Those events include working AMA National Enduros and Dual Sport Rides, Dealer “Sound Education Days”, major trail rides, and helping at sound clinics. On behalf of the BRC, he also runs the FMF/BRC Sound Testing Program for OHVs.

A number of the troops asked me to do a sample sound check on my bone stock 2001 Suzuki 1500 V-Twin Intruder using the test procedures of the SAE – J2825 20 inch sound test for street motorcycles.

Results for the 1500 Intruder:
Idle – 80.4 dBA
2000 rpm – 85.5 dBA

It appears this test procedure leaves plenty of room for healthy sounding aftermarket street exhaust systems, while screening out the obnoxiously loud street bikes.

This is a very good step for motorcycling!
