QWR Features Ed Santin's "Quiet" 2001 YZ250F

The Recreation HQ will be posting the sound levels reported to QWR from other “Quiet Warriors” out there in riding land who also work hard to promote a responsible “exhaust note” ethic.

On such individual is AMA District 36’s own Ed “specialed” Santin who remains a major national force in the field of sound education. Ed, a member of the Dirt Diggers North MC, has carried his message to the AMA, elected officials, state parks, and most importantly the riding community.

QWR is proud to feature Ed’s 2001 Yamaha YZ250F. with a Big Gun exhaust system with two quiet cores installed. The bike tests at 91.5 dBA and will run with any other 250F.

Specialed notes the bike is 10 years old and has only required one piston change and some valve shims. One of his goals is to have “sound cards” produced so that they can be handed out to riders by groups such as AMA, BRC, D36, and QWR.

Thanks Ed for all you do and for being part of the Quiet Warrior Team. It is only fitting that your bike is the first “quiet bike” to be featured here at the HQ.

HQ's View on SB 435 and Loud Street Bikes

Several street riders have contacted the Recreation HQ to see where The General stands on SB 435. This is a piece of legislation that has evolved from a motorcycle emission bill to a motorcycle sound bill.

Having seen the success of addressing excessively loud OHVs on public lands via the 2003 96dBA OHV sound law based on SAE J-1287, HQ believes that street riders should be proactive and embrace a similar effort for CA street bikes based on the new SAE-J2825 sound test.

Edmonton, a town in British Columbia, recently adopted a sound law based on J2825 and is holding sound clinics so riders can find out how loud their bikes are.

Both on-road and off-road motorcyclists must understand the general public does not distinguish between a loud off-road motorcycle or a loud on-road motorcycle. To the public - ALL motorcycles are the same and judged collectively. Off-road motorcyclists got their act together almost 8 years ago to protect their access to public lands by addressing excessively loud OHVs. Now it is time for the street-bike crowd to step up to the plate. Be proactive or get shut down.

Butte County Uses Common Sense to Address OHV Noise Issue

The Recreation HQ was pleased to hear about how common sense prevailed at the Butte County Board of Supervisors meeting yesterday where a potential new OHV ordinance was being considered to restrict OHV use on private land.

As the news article below points out, the BOS was addressing this issue because of several inconsiderate (i.e. spodes) track owners who apparently don’t care if they violate important tenets of being a “good neighbor.”

BRC was contacted about this on May 24 by one of our members (and darn good rider) who wanted us to convey some land-use management prescriptions to the BOS to that they would not impact families who ride on their own private property in a responsible manner. (we all remember the Riverside debacle – see 2004 BRC News Release below)

The General wants to commend the riders who showed up and championed responsible OHV recreation. HQ again wants to thank the BOS for using a flyswatter instead of a sledgehammer to address inconsiderate track owners.

Riding responsibly with a “sound” land-use ethic should not be relegated to just our public lands. Rather, it should be a concept that we use when riding on private property as well.
